Hamption to Cedar Falls- 68.8 miles with 2009 ft of climb.

Pass through towns are Aredale, Dumont, Kesley, Aplington, and Stout.

Conditions- HOT, HUMID, headwinds, although not too bad. HOT, HUMID!!!

Today started out a bit later than usual, but we needed a break!  We said goodbye to Hampton with it’s spectacular courthouse.  I was very curious as to it’s age since it appears to have been renovated.  I asked a local and he told me that it was built in 1860, but the dome on top was added last year at a cost of 2 million!  Very elaborate.

A typical morning shows scenes such as Jake and Ann folding their tents.  And now, finally hitting the road in the breakfast area, we see Janelle and Rebecca.  And here’s Aaron and Mel, who is a first time rider this year.  Some more newbies included Jessica and Adrian.  Now what a crew!  We had a blast.

My plan today was putting dress up day on the map.  This is an annual ragbrai tradition, but the memo never quite got sent.  Nevertheless, a few dressed up anyway.  Here’s Patti from Boulder who wore her wedding dress.  Doesn’t everybody?  And then Mike and Jeff from Huxley and DesMoines respectively went bananas!

The plans went rapidly awry today when Kristen dehydrated.  She rides like a mad woman and she just didn’t hydrate enough.  It was a scary ordeal for me, her dad.  She would stop and tell me that her legs weren’t working and she would hyperventilate.  But we were nowhere near quick help which we needed as the sun was beating everyone down.  So we found a shady spot and lay down under the tree for quite awhile and continued.  She didn’t last long.  Our final stopping point was in a rest area where there was an ambulance to transport Kristen to Cedar Falls.  Three IV’s (do you thing that paramedics in Rome call those 4’s?) later, she was released from the hospital and may ride tomorrow.
