POV-Ray is simply the best quality 3D rendering engine available anywhere, and it's freeware to boot.
But be warned, it's no walk in the park. It's definitely not for beginners, and it's not for the casual artist.
But for those with the necessary mathematical, technical, and aesthetic inclination and background (master Photoshop first) and the burning dedication to learn this unusual graphics application, it's the best thing going at any price.

These images look better outside web pallete, so feel free to save them to your desktop to view them.
