Gypsy Squirreltail

The Gypsy Squirreltail Streamer (bucktail) is a fairly traditional
fly, but one of the more effective ones I've found.
Hook: Mustad 79580 (4XL) size 2-8
Thread: Black monocord
Body: Royal red floss
Ribbing: Flat gold tensil (mylar)
Wing: Squirrel tail
Topping, peacock herl, 2 strands
Throat: ginger saddle hackle fibers
Tail: yellow saddle hackle fibers
If you've ever tied a streamer, there
are no surprises here. Start with a solid and smooth foundation, tie
in the tail, and set the floss before the foundation glue dries
completely to promote body durability. Wrap the mylar tensil, tie in
the throat, wing, and topping, being sure to get a proper balance.
Finish with a wrap knot. Nothing special in regard to the bench.
Nor is there anything special in
fishing it. In still water, keep the retrieve moving erratically,
darts and drops, placing it off of strategic points like stumps and
weed line breaks with a floating bug line. In moving water, play it
to the current cross and down current, keeping a relatively low
profile. Not a lot to say about the fly, except to mention the fun
you'll have catching fish with it. This is one worth the time and
effort on the bench.
