Zonker Strip Worm

This is the fly rod addicts' answer to
the soft plastic worm for bass fishing. Flies don't come much simpler
than this one. Wrap a foundation, add any lead desired to the hook
for weighting and a weed guard (stainless or monofilament), tie on
the zonker strip at the bend and wrap forward to the eye with a fresh
coat of cement on the foundation. Finish with a wrap knot. It's so
easy, I'm skipping the detailed tying instructions on this one. Any
wet fly hook in the 2-6 range will do. Just make sure that the point
is sharp and that the strip is balanced to the shank to avoid tippet
twist. Make up a variety of color and weight added models for
different applications on the water.
Fishing this fly takes a heavy rig, 8
weight or greater, with a 15 lb or heavier tippet. It's not very wind
resistant, but it is heavy when wetted. But it's a great fly for
catching bass, working as well, if not better, as a plastic worm. How
the fly is fished depends mostly on the weight added to the shank.
Unweighted worms are used near the surface to poke around stumps and
weed lines and breaks. Drop one of these into a pocket in the weeds
and watch out. The heavier weighted flies are cast to stumps and
stick up and channel breaks and allowed to sink, then they're
retrieved ever so slowly along the bottom. Give the rabbit hair a
chance to do its job on the fish, which it definitely will.
One note: Stay in contact with the fly
as much as possible and watch the line for the slightest motion. A
fly rod is not a worming rod, and the sense of touch that makes
worming so effective must be transferred to visual clues. If in
doubt, set the hook with a quick pop of the line. Don't rear back on
the rod like a worm rod. A small hump in the line is all that is
needed to transfer the necessary hook setting pressure with fly
hooks. Feel for a take up in the line, and if it's felt, put the
pressure on the fish quickly. It's a little different than worming,
but it's just as effective, once the routine is perfected.
Dry the fly thoroughly before returning
to the fly box to help precent general hook rusting.
