Bag Worm

This is a simple but very effective fly
for summer, especially when bag worms are infesting the local
trees.
Hook: Mustad 37160 (Caddis hook) 6 - 8
Body: Green sheet plastic
Hackle: Saddle hackle, ginger
Thread: Black monocord
This fly is very simple. Wrap a
foundation, cut a strip of green or brown sheet plastic, tie in,
followed by a prime wet fly grade saddle hackle, long and narrow and
shiny. Run the thread forward, follow with a smooth wrap of the
plastic and tie off. Wrap the hackle forward, getting it fairly thick
and bushy, like a bag worm and tie off. Finish with a full wrap knot
and cement. Be sure to make plenty of these for the season ahead.
This is a great fly for the shallows
and adjoining areas near the shoreline, especially near trees. It is
equally effective in still and running water. Fish of just about all
species love to grab one of the juicy bugs that fall from their nests
in the trees onto the water. The contour of the caddis hook gives an
impression that the worm is struggling, and that will trigger a bite
just about every time. Cast and allow to sink, or treat with dry fly
flotant. There is more than enough hackle to float the hook. Either
way, be ready for a quick strike, as this offering doesn't take long
to draw a reaction.
