Turkey Leftovers

This is a simple but effective fly made
from leftover parts of the wild turkey.
Hook: Mustad 9671 (2XL wet fly hook) 4-10
Tail: wild turkey marabou
Body: wild turkey marabou
Rib hackle: wild turkey side breast feathers
Thread: Monocord
Lay in a solid foundation and cement.
Tie in tail, tie in ribbing feathers. Dub marabou onto thread and
wrap forward to eye. Wrap feathers (like hackle) forward to eye and
tie off. Finish with a wrap knot and cement. That's it! Easy, they
can be cranked out by the dozens.
The fly is good for late season, when a
very slow presentation is important. The marabou in natural shades is
a very good leech imitation, as well as some late season aquatic
larva. The bug should be allowed to use the natural effects of
current or wind to give the fly a very natural creeping effect.
In warmer weather, the fly is a good
generic fly for a lot of situations, and faster retrieves work quite
well, taking advantage of the motion of the marabou on the go. And
being easy and inexpensive to make, they make great probing flies as
well.
