Rudolf's Revenge

This bright red spun deer hair bug is a
sure attractant when the bites are slow.
Hook: Mustad 9672 (3XL) 2- 6
Tail: Dyed marabou
Body: Dyed deer hair
Eye: Rattling doll eye
Glue: (for eyes) 5 minute epoxy
Thread: Kevlar
This is a pretty simple fly. Lay in a
short foundation at the bend of the hook, tie in the tail. Spin the
deer hair forward on a bare shank and finish with a wrap knot, cement
the head. Trim the hair to shape and add the eyes with 5 minute
epoxy. If you need a lesson in spinning deer hair, there are plenty
of books available to explain the technique.
This is a slow presentation surface
bug, ideal for still water in cold weather when fish are sluggish
from the reduced water temp. Cast with a heavy bug taper and allow
the bug to sit for long periods of time. Allow the surface wave
action to supply the marabou with all the motion it needs to intice
the fish into biting. It will often bring larger fish to the surface,
but only if it is left alone for longer than most anglers have
patience. It will work its magic if given ample time. Most fish in
cold water take their time to build up the urge to strike. Give them
time to respond, and you will have them on your line.
