Polywoggly

In the spring, this bullfrog tadpole
imitator does wonders in the shallows.
Hook: Mustad 3906B (1XL) 4 -10 wet fly hook
Tail: Dyed latex
Body: Ram's wool (dyed)
Eye: Golden doll's eye
Thread: Black monocord
This is a pretty simple fly. Cut and
dye the latex strips, about twice the length of the body (hook
shaft), being sure not to dye it too darkly. Some light should
naturally come through the material. Lay in a foundation and cement,
tie in the tail, being sure that it is aligned vertically. Then dub
the thread with generous portions of ram's wool and wrap forward,
being careful to avoid a lumpiness in the ovoid body. Tie off with a
wrap knot and cement. Trim the body smooth, then apply the eyes with
5 minute epoxy. This last process is best done at the end of the
tying session when all the bugs have been tied.
From mid-spring through mid-summer is
the best time to fish this bug, when the bullfrog tadpoles are
hatching. These are best fished on the edges and in holes in the
weedbeds, where the tadpoles can usually be found. Keep them moving
at a modest pace and vibrate the rod tip to attract attention. The
latex will do the job admirably in teasing the fish to strike.
