How do you make a balsa bug seem more alive? Fuzz it out!
Hook: Mustad 33903
Tail: Dyed marabou tufts
Body: Balsa popping body
Body dressing: Rams wool
Body sealer: 5 minute epoxy
Tie in the tail on a short foundation behind the kink in the hook shaft. Apply epoxy to the hook and set body. Apply epoxy to body and apply rams wool all facing toward the rear in line with retrieving motion. Allow to set overnight. Trim excess wool from the body. You want a moderate amount of wool, just enough to give the body added motion. You don't want a full fur ball.
Cast as you would any normal popping bug, only allow it to sit longer to allow the fur to create action of its own.
