THIS ISSUE'S SONG: Another Bumper
Sticker on Her Heart
This song is about as close to salinated lager (tears in
your beer) as I get and is consequently a bit tongue in cheek.
But it has the zingers that most country western songs try to nail,
and there is a story behind this song.
This song was inspired by Collette Caillouet's pick-up truck. (It was
her pick-up and not Collette per se, to press the distinction.) I had
been to a nearby jam session in the Christmas spirit, for it was the
holiday season. When it broke up, as I was loading my instruments and
the like into my car out by the relatively dark roadside, I passed by
Collette's truck. The tailgate was covered in bumperstickers, more
vinyl than paint, it seemed, and too dark to read. But the impression
was there, a lady's truck, tail gate covered with bumper stickers,
each a guy's name, spitting gravel on a dusty road in the opening
segment of the country video of this song, a flash of long hair in
the cab rear window, vanishing into the stormy dry cloud of her
departure.
It was just too classic to ignore. Play and sing it aggressively with
a romping 4/4.
Thanks, Collette. Nothing personal, you know that. This
song always brings a smile to my face.
